Happy Mother's Day

May 10, 2020
Motherhood is way over our heads! How can a person wear the hats of nurturer, helpmeet, nutritionist, counselor, educator, an example of all good things and all kinds of helps? During the 2020 pandemic, I have seen mothers rise to the challenges hurled upon them. Mothers of my students who had jobs accepted the responsibility of learning to teach school in the evenings when they got off from work or on their days off in addition to keeping up with household chores. Did these mothers have time to prepare academically? Without pre-planning, these caring moms rearranged their lives to step in and help their school-age children from preschool through college-age.
I have seen firsthand the dedication in my own mother’s life. When my grandmother needed help, my mother took the place of “mothering” her mother. At the same time that this was going on in my home, my mom was homeschooling me. Even then, she squeezed in essential things such as field trips, picnics, birthday parties, Vacation Bible School, American Girl club meetings, and Bible stories with the neighbors. She always made my dad feel as though he was the greatest man in the world. My mom prayed early in the morning, even though she was swamped. She instilled in me a desire to love the Lord and obey Him.
I have some great friends who did not have Christian mothers. I also have some great friends whose mothers are no longer alive. Mother’s Day brings painful memories to many people that I know.
My hat goes off to adoptive mothers. God has some very wonderful precious children whose mothers are absent. Adoptive parents allow Christ to fill their hearts with love for these children so that they open their arms and their homes to children in need of a loving home.
The Egyptian princess gave some excellent things to Moses that his mother could not have provided. The Bible offers examples of children who were not raised by biological parents such as Esther, and the Apostle Paul spoke of Timothy and others as his sons in the faith. The servant girl who brought the God of Israel to Naaman and his wife had been taken from her mother. The mother figure that she had known had probably been ripped from her life. Joseph’s mother died at an early age, and his father was taken from him suddenly, yet we see his witness for God in Egypt. We understand how God used him to save the lives of nations.
These children grew up to be world changers for God even though some of them did not have their mothers in their lives. Just because a child does not have her mother does not mean that she cannot become a wonderful Christian mother for her future children. Even this is provided in the Atonement of Christ. He can make up what is lacking in each life.
The task of being a mother is overwhelming. There are hundreds of books that have been written on how to be a good mom. Yet statistics show that one cannot be a good mother without first knowing Christ as her personal Savior. It is taken very lightly in our world today, but bringing a child into this world is a very serious matter with eternal consequences. A mother and father can play a huge role in the eternal destiny of their child. When a mother decides to have a baby, it should not be to add another number to her household, but because she wants to raise a child to serve Christ.
As a teacher, I have seen the spiritual war that is raged in the lives of little children. They have a real enemy just like we all do. Satan does not want children to serve the Lord. God has given us tools. Mothers are to avail themselves of these weapons of prayer and the Word of God. The task is too great for a mother alone but not for a mother who walks with the Lord.
The heart of a child is where the work takes place. While the mother is wearing her many hats, her faith must be in Christ, her knees bent in prayer, her heart filled with trust, and her love unending for her child to become transformed to know Christ.
