The Peace of Pentecost
"But the Comforter,
which is
the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." John 14:26-27
As US cities smolder from burning and deadly riots, we encounter Pentecost Sunday. After reeling from weeks of quarantine and social distancing, we wake up to an unfamiliar America. Worldwide, the effects of COVID-19 have caused hunger, pain, and death from the virus accompanied by the lockdowns and economic shutdowns. We are living in a day of unrest, turmoil, and violence, not merely against property, but humanity.
Pentecost ushered Christ's followers into the Church. Now more than ever, this world needs the healing comfort and prayers the Church can provide. While most of us may feel anger, pain, anguish, and uncertainty during this tumultuous time, our hope and strength come from Jesus, not this world. As we lift our heads heavenward, let Christ's faithfulness wash away the fear and anxiety. Allow the Comforter to begin a more magnificent work in our hearts and minds. Troubling times are opportunities for God's faithfulness. It is our responsibility to rise to these occasions as ambassadors for Christ in a scary world. We rise because He has risen. We love others because He first loved us. We show compassion because He forgave those who murdered Him. We help others in need because He helps us every day.
If there was ever a time in world history where we needed Pentecost Sunday, this is our time. We have been born again for these circumstances. God has equipped us with His power to meet the needs of this generation. The Comfort this world needs is within us because Christ sent the Comforter to us. It is time for the Church to unleash the power of Pentecost in this dying world. It is time for us to allow the presence of God to flood our lives and actions with His power.
Pray to God before you speak. Listen to the voice of Christ before you react to others. Find the guidance of the Holy Spirit before you set out on your daily path.
As we look heavenward for our direction, action, and speech, we draw the hurting, lost, and dying souls around us closer to the Comforter they need.
May God's peace fill your heart and share that peace with others today.
